Real Life Reading

Real life reading, encouraging kids to engage with reading in real life situations

Bud has been learning to read for a little while, but enthusiasm is starting to slide so when he showed interest in something I was reading I was delighted!  This gave us an opportunity to read something 'real'.

How to engage kids in reading

I'd love to say I was reading something highbrow and intellectual, but I was (ahem!) actually flicking through a flyer for mobile phones!  This isn't something Bud is especially passionate about, but it clearly caught his eye so we ran with it.

Getting kids reading

I started pointing out a few words for him to read and as he seemed to readily want to read, I underlined a few more and got him to read them and sound out the ones he didn't know.

Helping kids to read

I hadn't even noticed that the 'a' was written in a different way to he was used to, but Bud pointed this out and I explained it then we looked for more 'a's together and read a few more words.

Encouraging kids to read

Bud then thought he was very funny and circled a few words for me to read, so for the ones I thought he should be able to read himself I got them wrong and got him to correct me.

Super simple, no prep required and it was a bit different from the normal school books we read.  Plus it gave Bud exposure to 'real' writing and he got to see Mummy read to (even if it was about mobile phones!).

  1. Love this - do think there's lot of value in "real" reading. My daughter much more likely to engage with it than with a book where the reading bit for her gets in the way of a good story!

    1. It's what worked for us and he seems to be re-engaging with the school books again, phew!

  2. I think that's great. For a while my son kept saying, I can't read that it isn't in my story books. Thanks for sharing at TGIF!

Hope to see you linked up again today.
