Champ is starting to learn his alphabet or more specifically we've started to look a bit at phonics. Knowing Champ's great love of crafting a Speech Therapist recommended that we make a 'sounds book', here's what we did...
First up I gave Champ an old toy catalogue and told him he could choose any pictures he liked and asked him if he could cut them out.
He set about cutting out his favourite toy characters as well as a few animals.
Then we lined up his selection and named them, taking care to make sure we sounded them out fully and discussed what letter or sound they started with.
Next up Champ got sticking them into his sounds book. This is just an exercise book that has a letter of the alphabet for each page.
Here's the finished book. I say finished, but this is an ongoing activity that Champ and I are working on, we try and do it together once a week each time he adds a couple more pictures and we go through the whole book making sure we pronounce the words correctly and identifying the letter that each picture starts with.

Oh that is a really clever idea. You remember more when it has semantic meaning :O)
ReplyDeleteThis is a cool idea to help promote literacy too!
