Money Counting - A Fun Math Activity

Money counting math activity for kids

This fun maths activity was entirely Granny's idea so she has to take all the credit, although I have seen something similar at Kids Activities Blog.

First of all Granny gave Bud a box of loose change, mostly one and two piece coins.  I gave Bud a piece of paper for each and we started to sort them.

Soon we had two heaped piles of coins.

So, next up we counted the coins.  We started counting the coins, but as Bud can't get too far beyond 20 we started to pile them into groups of 5 and then counted the piles.  We did the same for the two pence pieces and then I added them up.

I think Bud enjoyed this activity as he's since told me he wants to be a banker!

  2. I like how you first had your son sort them. This is great to have them recognize the different coins. My daughter is learning how to count by 5s and 10s and her younger brother plays with the coins as we count. Next time, I'm going to give him two sheets of paper and some coins to sort. Thanks for the great idea! He is going to enjoy being involved with his own age appropriate activity to complete.

  3. So many copper coins. We don't have anymore copper coins in Australia. So nice to see that colour again. What fun! I'll be featuring your post as part of my maths activities for kids roundup from the Weekly Kids' Co-op. Thanks for sharing. xoxo P

  4. Such a fun way to learn counting. And a fun thing to do with all the pennies laying around the house :)
