Things to do with carrots and kids!

So normally on a Wednesday I would update you on our outdoor play over the past week, well I've decided to mix things up a little!  We're still going to go outdoors everyday, but I'm not necessarily going to tell you about it every time - how many times do you really want to read about us going to the park!

What I'm going to do instead is theme our activities each week.  Hopefully this will help me think up things to do with the boys as creativity is running low!  Some of these will be inside, some outside, first up carrots!

Why carrots?  Well I did an online shop and thought I'd ordered six carrots and instead got six BAGS of carrots - opps time for some carrots and kids ideas!

1 - Carrot print painting
We've done potato printing, let's face it it's a classic, but never carrots!  Here's the set up - half a carrot and some paint!

Then the boys got stamping.

Then smearing.

Then there was some colour mixing.

Some carrot rolling.

And finally (if you can spy it in the picture) some carrot bashing which left chunks of carrot on the picture - and that's when I knew it was time to stop!

2 - Peeling and chopping carrots
The idea for this is taken from Learning for Life where they taught their pre-schoolers to whittle by peeling carrots.  The boys were delighted to be taught how to peel carrots as they knew there was an element of danger to this!

Then they were REALLY excited to be allowed to use knives!  Don't worry they were fully supervised and handled the responsibility very well.

3 - Grow a carrot top
The idea for this came from Hunkins Experiments, follow the link as they also have an experiment to grow carrot leaves upside down as well!  This is what we set up, but I'll be honest we haven't had an leaves yet!

4 - Carrot root experiment
This was one of three root experiments suggested by the Carrot Museum (who knew there was a carrot museum!).  Basically you put a carrot in coloured water and if you look super hard you can see some blue streaks, good for teaching kids about how roots work.

5 - Make a carrot kazoo
Oh the wonderful world of YouTube!  Check out this demo as to how to make a carrot kazoo, again ours wasn't especially successful but the boys thought it was awesome to make an instrument out of a vegetable and promptly asked if we could try it with potatoes!

6 - Eat them!
And if in doubt, just eat them!

I hope you've enjoyed our carrot fun, let me know if you have any other good carrot and kid ideas!  Don't forget to check out our facebook page.

  1. So many great ideas! I often use mini cookie cutters and cut little shapes from carrots for Mr 2 and Mr 4! No child can resist a mini bunny shaped carrot :P

  2. Oh my! I love this post so much! When in doubt, just eat them :) I picture you all sitting around, scratching your heads because you can't think up any other creative carrot ideas, so you finally just dig in. Very cool stuff. (Found you through the Playtime linkup.)
